We are delighted to welcome Sophie Eden to the Mickleburgh team, Sophie has been playing the piano by ear from an early age, and in the last 10 years has played at a wide range of venues and functions, including Weddings, Masonic Lodges, Military Dinners and Corporate Events. Her clients have included a former Prime Minister and Sarah Brightman’s family. She provides background music with an extensive repertoire from old to contemporary styles from classical to jazz, creating an ambiance and atmosphere for all occasions.
Sophie’s repertoire includes popular classical pieces, London Show Music, easy listening from Nat King Cole to Frank Sinatra, Scott Joplin, Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and modern music to date from Jack Johnson to Adele to name a few. Sophie will tailor her repertoire to suit all tastes and age groups and is happy to meet all her clients to discuss all musical ideas and requirements prior to playing at an event.

We are very pleased to announce that our piano showroom at Mickleburgh Bath, is now manned seven days a week. Our new opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm and on a Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Bath is a fabulous city to visit and we often sell pianos to customers who are visiting the city for short breaks. We include delivery within a 50 mile radius of Bath and have an extensive range of upright and grand pianos to choose from. Piano Lessons Top Tips #2: Learn to listen

Piano students sometimes tend to focus on what their fingers are doing (or aren’t doing) to the exclusion of everything else. If only their fingers would go where they wanted, they’d be playing Chopin etudes flawlessly in no time. Au contraire! Your fingers can only go where the ear tells them to. If you can’t sing the notes, if you can’t imitate a musical gesture with your voice (and also silently, in your imagination) you will be stuck playing mechanically.

But don’t despair if this seems like a foreign concept to you— it can be learnt at any age! It will, though, take dedicated practice. Just as you must practice scales regularly and rejoice in each incremental improvement you see, you must also practice listening, imitating, and making sound with your voice.

1. Play by ear. Pick a song, any song. I quite often start adult students on Christmas carols. (More on this in a later post)

2. Imitate. If you can’t play or sing the notes, follow an outline. Mockery will get you everywhere.

3. Sing back a song you know— all the way through. Can you remember all the details? Melodic lines? Words to all the verses?

And remember, if this is a new skill, it will take time. Be patient with yourself and cultivate time and space where you’ll feel comfortable listening and imitating and playing with this way of making music.

Hoffmann V112 and V120 in Stock

We at Mickleburgh Bath have just taken delivery of another Hoffmann V112 upright piano. These pianos, made by Bechstein, have proven extremely popular since we began carrying them at the start of this year.

If you have been waiting for this to come into the showroom, please feel free to come in and hear it at any time.

We also have in the showroom currently a first-class reconditioned Yamaha U1 upright, three fine Kawai uprights, a Kawai grand piano, and of course an exquisite hand-reconditioned, fully-restored Bechstein demi-grand and a new Petrof grand.
